Is it necessary to have some of my teeth removed before I get braces? Orthodontic treatment involves a strategy that a specialist tailors to your unique dental condition. An orthodontist might suggest that you have teeth removed to make room for braces. Perhaps he would like to remove one or two teeth, or perhaps he would like to remove four or more. In this post, we will answer any questions you may have about having teeth removed for orthodontic reasons.

If you are seeing an orthodontist for the first time, they will examine your entire mouth and count your teeth. Each adult has two sets of teeth: permanent teeth and baby teeth. You will likely need to have x-rays of your mouth taken, and then the orthodontist will do a thorough examination.

Additionally, they will ask you a variety of questions so they can better understand your dental habits. They may suggest you have some teeth removed.

Why are teeth extracted for braces?

Adult teeth may be removed for several reasons, but the main one is to allow your dentist to use a treatment device to align your teeth. If you have severe crowding, you won’t have enough space for your teeth to erupt and grow properly.

There may be some lingering baby teeth, and you may need to have them removed to give you the best chance of a successful outcome. Furthermore, your orthodontist may need to clear the path to effectively move your teeth with brackets.

There is always a scientifically valid reason for moving your teeth before braces, but the best reason is that your child’s dentist or orthodontist wants you to have the biggest advantage possible so that you can see the highest level of success.

Why is it beneficial to remove teeth for braces?

There are several benefits to removing bothersome and lingering teeth before getting braces. There will be more room for the orthodontist to work and for the teeth to shift as a result. Without removing some of your teeth, the orthodontist may have to devise a roundabout way for your teeth to shift to their proper positions. By eliminating some of them, complex bracket-building strategies are no longer needed. Getting rid of the smile obstacles first may also reduce treatment time. You will want your smile restored as soon as possible, and the best way to achieve that is to follow the advice of your child’s dentist or orthodontist.

The process of removing teeth

In most cases, teeth can be removed in one appointment. If your treatment plan involves removing more than two teeth, you may need a second appointment to avoid too much trauma to your mouth and jaw at once. Your child’s dentist will use a numbing agent and then comfortably wiggle the teeth that need to be removed. It may take a few weeks between the time that you have the extraction and the time that your braces are fitted for you to fully heal.
