5 Tips for Handling the Most Common Issues with Braces | Rancho Cucamonga CA Kids Dentist

Orthodontist in Rancho Cucamonga

Braces are one of the most common orthodontic treatments used to adjust the alignment of teeth. Unfortunately, they also come with their own set of common issues. Here are some tips on how to handle the most common issues with braces.

Discomfort

When you first get braces, there may be some discomfort as your mouth adjusts to the appliance. This is normal and usually subsides within a few days. To help ease the discomfort, take ibuprofen or acetaminophen as directed, and rinse your mouth with a saltwater solution. Applying wax to the brackets can also help reduce the rubbing sensation. If the discomfort persists, make sure to contact your orthodontist for further advice.

Brackets Falling Off

Sometimes, the brackets on your braces may come loose. If this happens, contact your orthodontist for an appointment. In the meantime, you can use dental wax to hold the bracket in place. You can also use orthodontic wax to cover any sharp edges that may be causing discomfort.

Trouble Eating

When you first get braces, it can be difficult to eat certain foods. To make eating easier, start with softer foods such as mashed potatoes, soup, and yogurt. As you get more used to the braces, you can gradually move on to tougher foods. Avoid hard, crunchy, and sticky foods such as popcorn, nuts, and gum. Also, make sure to brush and floss after every meal to keep your braces clean and free from food debris.

Irritated Gums

Braces can cause your gums to become irritated and swollen. To help soothe the irritation, rinse your mouth with a saltwater solution several times a day. You can also use a warm compress to reduce inflammation. Make sure to keep the area clean and free from food debris. If the irritation persists, contact your orthodontist for further advice.

Loose Wires

If the wires on your braces become loose, contact your Rancho Cucamonga orthodontist for an appointment. In the meantime, use a cotton swab or eraser to gently push the wire back into place. You can also use orthodontic wax to cover any sharp edges that may be causing discomfort.

By following these tips, you can easily handle the common issues associated with braces. Remember to contact your orthodontist if the issue persists or worsens. With proper care and maintenance, you can ensure that your braces are working properly and helping you achieve the beautiful smile you’ve always wanted.
